COVID-19 Response - Face Shields

How Can I Help?

Introduction

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wicked Engineering, LLC has started manufacturing face shields to help protect our friends, first responders and health care workers.  The face shield design is based on an an open source initiative of Prusa, a world leading manufacturer of FDM 3D printing equipment.  More information from the source can be found here, but were providing all critical information right here on this web page for the sake of clarity.

For those that are wearing these shields, thank you for risking your lives to save the lives of others.  You are true heroes.

Construction
Our face shields are composed of four components, the headband, the chin brace, an elastic strap, and most importantly the face shield.  The headband and chin brace are 3D printed using PLA or PETG filament.  The face shield is manufactured from PETG or PC sheet which is cut to shape using a computer controlled knife.  The elastic strap is cut from a roll of elastic material commonly used in the clothing industry.  All components are hand assembled, then the assembled shields are wiped down with 91% isopropyl alcohol and then disinfected using UVGI (ultraviolet germicidal irradiation) and then immediately bagged by operators wearing gloves and a respirator.

Identification
It is critical that PPE is manufactured in a controlled environment and following best safety practices for the health and well being of those we are helping to protect.  Our face shields will have our Wicked Engineering logo on the right temple of the headband.  If you see the Wicked Engineering logo, you know that it was manufactured according to the specifications on this page.

Disinfecting
We are providing the face shields with the best level of disinfection we can.  We wipe them down with 91% isopropyl alcohol and then treat them with UVC for 30 minutes at >0.25mW/cm^2 immediately prior to bagging.  Prusa, in combination with the Czech Ministry of Health, has been very active seeking proven methods of field disinfection.  At the request of Prusa, due to the critical and rapidly changing nature of their work, we are linking to their website for information about disinfecting these face shields.  Here is a link to that information.
